This historical analysis looked at the relationship between the sugar industry and the National Caries Program (NCP). The NCP was launched in 1971, and was notable for glaring omissions regarding the role of sugar in contributing to tooth decay. The authors conclude that public policy initiatives be carefully evaluated in order to ensure that industry interests do not supersede public health goals.
