Medical Pearls from the Internet Medical Association

There was no significant difference in weight loss among participants randomly assigned to weight-loss focused websites featuring: a) information only, b) supportive-based, or c) personalized-supportive.

Comment: This study suggests that compared to a personalized supportive website, a website featuring weight-loss information only was just as effective at getting participants to lose weight. The major challenge was to get participation. Most people ended up dropping out of the online programs and their weight loss was not tracked. Other research has found that the inclusion of games may help keep participants engaged, and help them lose more weight.
