A high dietary glycemic load increases the risk of coronary heart disease (HR 1.4). A low to moderate glycemic load diet that also conforms to the Mediterranean diet is estimated to result in a 40% reduced risk for coronary heart disease, and a 50% reduced risk for death from coronary heart disease.
