Medical Pearls from the Internet Medical Association

A heritage in health program in which 57 hospital patients participated in semi-structured facilitated interview sessions during which museum artifacts and specimens where discussed and handled, found that patients experienced significant increases in well-being and happiness.

Comment: This study suffers from the Hawthorne Effect. There was no control group. Who is to say that the same benefits would not have been obtained in a person simply came and sat with the patient, providing companionship? This study does not show that handling and discussing art objects has any benefit over simply sitting and talking with patients.
