Cognitive-behavioral counseling was better than routine counseling at increasing the duration of exclusive breast feeding of newborns, resulting in a doubling of the rate of exclusive breast feeding at 6 months postpartum.

Comment: Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of counseling that focuses on specific problems and identifies specific actions to take to solve them. The counselor helps the patient think (cognitive) through the issue, and together they identify specific actions (behavioral) that will result in a positive benefit.
