Social status can be objective (e.g. education level) or subjective (i.e. your self-assigned social status). Both predict a sense of well-being. This study found that subjective social status more strongly predicted life satisfaction, positive affect, sense of purpose, and self acceptance in the U.S. than in Japan. The opposite was true for objective social status in that it was a stronger predictor in Japan than in the U.S.
