This analysis of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing found that happiness and wellbeing was associated with increased survival independent of age, sex, demographic factors, baseline mental health, and baseline physical health. Almost a third (29%) of those in the lowest quartile of wellbeing died during the average follow-up period of 8.5 years, compared to only 9% of those in the highest quartile. Unhappiness (wellbeing) was found to have a hazard ratio for mortality of about 3.3 compared to happiness in this study.
