This study of elderly men and women aged 87 +/- 7 years of age found that tai chi improved strengh, walking speed, balance, and mobility.

Comment: Note that the control group for this study engaged in educational sessions that did not involve any exercise. This was a crossover study, and only one of the two groups improved their balance and mobility. Thus, this study suggests that exercise is good but does not show that tai chi is better than other forms of exercise. The lack of improvement in balance in one of the two groups is interesting, possibly indicating a need for specific balance exercises.
