The time from onset of stroke to treatment with rtPA makes a big difference in stroke outcome. The number needed to treat to achieve an improved outcome as judged by the Modified Rankin Scale (http://bit.ly/SoMPsO) ranged from 4.5 if given within first 1.5 hours after stroke onset; up to 18.0 if given up to 4.5 hours after stroke onset. The mortality did not vary up to 4.5 hours.
