All combined oral contraceptives increase the risk of venous thromboembolism. These authors suggest that when possible, women be prescribed the lowest possible dose of ethinylestradiol that has good compliance, specifically 30 μg ethinylestradiol with levonorgestrel (e.g. Altavera, Seasonale) in order to minimize the risk of venous thromboembolism.
