Malaria, a parasitic infection of red blood cells, continues to kill approximately 2000 people a day, mostly children in Africa.

Comment: Sulfadoxine�pyrimethamine chemoprevention treatment in pregnancy is used in Africa. Thick and thin blood film microscopy examination is the standard for diagnosis, although rapid finger-prick blood tests are also available. There are no good vaccinations available, and the best method of prevention is pyrethroid-insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Severe infection is a medical emergency. Artemisinin combination treatment is the recommended first-line therapy for uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
