This study found that the risk of a crash or near-crash among novice drivers was 8x more likely if they were dialing a cell phone; 8x more likely when reaching for an object other than a cell phone; 7x more likely when reaching for a cell phone; 4x more likely when sending or receiving text messages; 4x more likely when looking at a roadside object; and 3x more likely when eating. More experienced drivers also had increased risk when distracted although this group was not studies as extensively.
