Almost all patients with tinnitus should undergo audiometry and tympanometry. Some may require neuroimaging or electronystagmography.

Comment: Tinnitus is the perception of noise when no actual sound is present. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Although it is often idiopathic, the most common etiology is sensorineural hearing loss. Serious causes include Meniere disease and vestibular schwannoma. Treatment depends on the cause; hearing aids may help reduce symptoms when sensorineural hearing loss (presbycusis) is the cause.
