After a car accident involving a severe brain injury, a patient is in a vegetative state and on a ventilator. No written advance directive is present, but the wife and children state the patient said previously he did not want to live in a vegetative state. The wife asks you to remove the ventilator. You do, but the patient now is able to breathe on his own. The wife then asks you to stop all IV hydration. The patient's children agree. What do you do?

A. Go to the hospital ethics committee.

B. Stop the IV fluids.

C. Don't start any new treatments, but you have to leave the IV in and continue hydration.

D. Get a court order, then if the court says it is OK you can stop IV hydration.

E. Continue hydration and all medical treatments.
